If students want to come to school in costume on Oct. 31, 2025, to participate in our Halloween Parade, costumes must meet the following guidelines:
Be respectful: Avoid stereotypes. Be racially sensitive and culturally appropriate. Students may not dress up as an ethnic or cultural group (i.e., a Mexican, a Geisha, a Native American, a Sumo Wrestler, etc.). Skin color must not be altered in any way.
Be responsible: Recognize that students in a wide age range will see the costumes. Costumes should be family friendly. Masks may not be worn. Costumes may not be gory or threatening. Make-up must be minimal and able to be removed by student when parade is over.
Be safe: No hand-held accessories real or pretend (i.e., wands or weapons) are allowed. Crowns or hats may be worn. No masks.
Be kind: Costumes should be fun and exciting, not political, or offensive.
Be Understanding: Students may dress up as fictional characters if they follow the above guidelines.
Note: Please note, dressing up as Pocahontas or other Native American Leaders is inappropriate. Culture is not a costume. In respect to the Native American view, please advise students to refrain from dressing up as Native Americans (i.e., Pocahontas, Sacagawea, Sitting Bull, etc.). This is cultural appropriation and is unacceptable.
On the day of the celebration, the teacher will check to see that all students are following costume guidelines. If a student’s costume is violating costume guidelines, they will not participate in the parade.
ALL costumes will be removed immediately after the program. Please make sure your child is able to remove their costume on their own. Kinder parents who attend the parade may assist their child afterward with the removal of their costume.
ALL parents will line up around the blacktop on the big playground east of the school. You do NOT need to check in at the office. Please do not block the marked entrance and exit on the north end. The parade will start promptly at 9:15 to allow time for teachers to check costumes.
If you have questions, please call or email Mrs. J at kjohnston@dsdmail.net. We want to make it a fun, safe day for all!
