Principal Jody Schaap

I am excited to have the opportunity to work at Sand Springs Elementary. Layton is home to me. It is where I grew up and where I have spent most of my career. It has been fun to get to know so many good people of West Layton. It seems I find a new set of grandparents I know at each program we have. I like being so connected to those friends from the past. I look forward to another great year at Sand Springs.

As an Educator, I have taught, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades. I miss being a teacher. When I walk into a classroom, I always reflect on what I would do if I were the teacher. This will be my 29th year in school administration. I spent 6 years as an Administrative Intern (Assistant Principal) and the last 23 years as a Principal. Even though I miss being a teacher, I love being a Principal. I love the connections with students, parents, and teachers that I have the privilege of making each year.

In 2009, I was given the National Distinguished Principals award for the State of Utah.  This was a humbling honor. I had the chance to go back to Washington D.C. with representatives from each state and represent the wonderful Principals of Utah.  I have also received awards on the District level as Instructional Leader of the Year and Mentor of the Year two different times.

As a person, I enjoy many things. I love being with my family and I spend a lot of time with my nieces and nephews. My parents have lived in West Yellowstone, Mt. for over 38 years and I consider that my second home. I try to spend as much time there as possible. I enjoy being outside. When I have time for hobbies, you can find me keeping up the family photo albums, sewing a quilt top, reading, or enjoying a good “chick flick”.
